Profile

Sworn translator specialised in legal and financial content. Analytical, inquisitive and detail-oriented. I take pride in applying my expertise to realise impeccable textual products, both individually as well as in client-specific teams.

I have been registered in the Dutch Sworn Translators and Interpreters Registry under number 29246 since 2020 and have been actively performing sworn translations ever since, both manually and by means of computer-assisted translation tools. Since 2020, I have explicitly and intentionally worked in accordance with the relevant standards on translation quality (ISO 17100) and data security (ISO 27001).

Notarial instruments in the fields of corporate law and inheritance law are my bread and butter. I have also been responsible for translating the financial statements of several multi-million euro companies and investment funds for several years on end, as recurring clients.

I have played a key role in the winning of various tenders, including tenders for multiple leading universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands. Moreover, I have reviewed and corrected their pre-existing writing guides and terminology, all this in close consultation with said universities as clients.

As a by-product of coordinating the linguistic side of such collaborative efforts, I have also successfully taken on the role of translation content manager for such key clients in practice, providing and receiving feedback and coordinating terminology and style choices across client-specific teams consisting of up to five translators.

Experience

In-house sworn translator at Urgent Vertalen (The Hague, the Netherlands)
2020 to present (full-time)

Performing sworn translations of various legal and economic documents (notarial instruments, financial statements, agreements and contracts, regulations, rulings, etc.) as well as non-sworn translations for leading universities, the latter including translations and proofreading activities in the field of medicine, scientific research and publications in scientific journals. Providing technical support to colleagues on the use of CAT tools and assorted IT issues. Advising management on the content and scope of contracts, privacy agreements and service-level agreements (to be) concluded with external parties.

Acted as final reviser in translation assignments as part of tenders for three leading universities (of applied sciences), all of which were won as a result.

Responsible for content management for non-sworn translations on a client-by-client basis; working with and at times coordinating a group of up to four other translators. Coordinated term alignment across multiple clients and across several in-house and external translators.

Advised on the streamlining of project management for key clients across translators, using a centralised database to prevent unnecessary loss of content.

Guaranteed customer satisfaction by providing answers to clients’ technical (linguistic) questions and reviewing the work of other translators deemed sub-par by clients, all this on the basis of industry-specific relevant literature.

Performing commercial translations (performed independently) as well as legal and economic translations (initially performed under the supervision of an experienced translator). Preparing transcripts and subtitles for video and audio files. Researching MT providers, their viability, and procedural pitfalls.

Advised on the first use of in-house CAT tools. Produced subtitle files for clients and prepared a guide for freelance translators engaged by the company for the production of subtitle files and, in doing so, laid the foundation for access to a new market segment.

Performing commercial translations and conducting the management over Caxton Translations as sole proprietorship. Conducting preliminary market research, examining viability and performing all assorted business tasks required (invoicing, filing returns, taking out appropriate insurances, et cetera).
